As part of National Pet Adoption Day 2017, more than 120 PETstock stores across Australia will play host to pet rescue experts who will answer any questions you might have.

In some stores, pets from shelters or pounds will be accompanying the experts, in a bid to raise awareness over the startling numbers of animals in need of adoption across Australia.

It’s estimated that over 230000 healthy pets remain unclaimed, and that each year around 100,000 are put to sleep, as no home can be found for them.

These animals are often in shelters through no fault of their own, and it’s not always even the owner’s fault – in many cases the owners love their pets very much but are forced to surrender them due to a change of circumstances beyond their control. These are not bad pets: they’re loving companions who have just had bad luck.

All pets adopted are desexed, vaccinated and treated for parasites and you can choose a pet that best suits your family situation.

A wide range of unusual pets including ferrets, mice, and even pet snakes wind up in shelters too.

Last year’s National Pet Adoption day saw over 400 pets rehomed, and organisers are hoping to increase that number this year. Volunteers will be in stores between 10am and 2pm.

If just one in four pet owners chose to adopt instead of buying their pets, pet homelessness in Australia would end.
