Grooming pets in winter

Grooming pets in winter

Winter is no reason to have your pets looking anything other than their best. Yes, growing your longer-haired dog or cat’s hair during these cooler months can help them keep their body heat in an easier fashion — but brushing is still absolutely essential to prevent matting and knots, which can be quite uncomfortable and irritating for pets.

Another element of cleanliness that can go neglected during winter is dental hygiene. Many pet owners will keep their pet indoors more often in winter, and as such, may notice if his or her dog or cat is suffering from bad breath or gum and/or teeth problems. Keep an eye on your pet’s mouth during these colder months, and don’t forget that you can always brush their teeth using specially formulated animal toothpaste and a special animal toothbrush.

Finally, while bath time is a lot more unpleasant during winter due to the slower drying time, it is still something we need to attend to — and, for those pets who like to get up to mischief in the mud, it may be necessary even more so during this damp season! To make it as pleasant as possible for your pet, ensure you have warm towels at hand to dry your pet as soon as it is removed from the water. Place your four-legged friend in front of the heater or fireplace, and, if your pet is accustomed to loud noise, you could even try using a hairdryer to rid the pet of moisture as quickly as possible.
