Puppy Checklist

Puppy Checklist

The start of the year is when many people throughout Australia and New Zealand bring home a new furry friend to join their family. Whether you’re taking home a gorgeous pup from a breeder or rescuing a new companion from a shelter, there are certain things you’re going to need to ensure your first few months with your new furry friend go smoothly. Here is our checklist:

  • Puppy bedding. When choosing the bedding for your puppy, PETS recommends something with a removable cover so you can wash it with ease in case of any accidents. Make sure you pad it out with blankets to ensure your new pup doesn’t get cold.
  • Puppy food. When you bring a pet home, always ask the person you got the pet from what diet they were feeding it. Little stomachs can be very sensitive to changes in food and any new meal regime should be introduced gradually over time by decreasing the old food items and adding some more of your own. Most pups need to be fed at least twice a day but check with your local veterinarian and the person you bought the puppy from for more information.
  • Puppy toys. They’re young, excited and they have teeth that are just dying to tear apart your favourite pair of shoes. Puppies need toys not only for enrichment, but also to help ensure they don’t destroy parts of your house. By purchasing toys now, you can teach your pup appropriate play behaviours.KONG_Classic
We like the puppy range from KONG. These are made from a soft, rubber substance that is perfect for tiny doggies going through the teething stage. They also provide great brain enrichment if you add some food or treats into their body, allowing your pup the opportunity to try to get them out. For more information, visit kongcompany.com.

  • Toileting products. Toilet training can be a difficult time, for both owner and pup! Help make this stressful time a little easier with some help from Nature’s Miracle. The company’s House-Breaking Potty Training Spray is specially formulated to help train your dog to relieve itself wherever it’s sprayed. What a fabulous all-natural helping hand.
