This issue, Dr Katrina talks about the finer points of puppy play.

Puppy playtime is what puppies do best — they love to rumble, and games can certainly be an effective way to burn off your puppy’s excess energy. How you play with your puppy will have a  big impact on how they play as an adult dog. They must learn etiquette with their teeth, self-control and to give up a toy when you ask. Games can be very rewarding for puppies and can also be used as a way to praise your pooch for good behaviour.

It is important to choose safe toys for playtime that are made from materials that your puppy can’t easily destroy, and they must be of suitable strength/size for your dog. Some puppies have stronger jaws than others and while soft, stuffed toys might be suited to a small-breed puppy, they are often unsuitable for a bigger puppy with a stronger jaw. For these puppies, it may be better to graduate them to a Classic red KONG, which is a stronger grade of rubber and which exercises those stronger jaws.

Playing games with your pup is also a great way to bond and the new KONG Puppy Ball is perfect for  beginning games. This is the puppy version of the popular KONG Ball for adult dogs and uses KONG’s exclusive puppy rubber formula, specifically designed to ease teething gums while teaching correct chewing habits.
