The Cat Protection Society of NSW gives PETS readers some great tips on how to walk your cat using a harness.

Using a harness is a great way to give your cat exercise and experience of the outside world without you worrying that it may run away or get hurt. Make sure that the harness is the right size and has adjustable straps so that your cat doesn’t wriggle out of it. It is important to get your cat used to the feel of wearing a harness before you try to walk outside.

Start by putting on the harness without the lead and letting your cat walk around for five or 10 minutes. It is natural for your cat to freeze the first time this happens; reassure them, and if they seem distressed, give them a break. Once your cat has done this a few times and looks comfortable in the harness, you can attach the lead and let the cat get used to the extra weight. Next you can reward him and encourage him to walk by holding a treat in front of him and taking some steps forward. Once your cat follows you, give him the treat and repeat this until your cat is walking along with you.

At Cat Protection Society we believe that the best way to train any pet is with positive reinforcement, so make sure to always give your cats lots of pats and praise. For more information, visit catprotection.org.au.
