Emmerson tells the tale of how she came to meet Buddy, the beautiful German Shepherd cross with the big, protective heart.

Hi PETS! I’m writing to tell you about my amazing best fur friend, Buddy, and to tell you his story and how he came to live with us. In 2007, when I was two-and-a-half, my mum, twin sister and I were going to visit my mum’s friend. As we drove out of the driveway something ran across the road in front of the car and into bushes. Mum got out of the car and called out and a puppy came out of the bushes.

We picked it up and looked for the owners. We door-knocked houses in the area, put notices in the local shop and contacted the local radio station so they could add it to their lost-and-found notices, and we also had the vet check for a microchip. Nobody came forward and claimed him so we decided to keep him and we named him Buddy!

Buddy is a German Shepherd cross and weighs about 40kg, but he thinks he is a lap dog — whenever you sit down he tries to climb into your lap! There is a great story about Buddy that happened one day when my sister and I were about three-and-a-half. We were going to the shops with mum. She was helping me into my car seat when my sister decided to go and explore along the road.

Buddy barked and ran around in circles until mum asked him what was wrong and realised where my sister was. She let Buddy out of the gate and he ran after my sister and “herded” her until my mum could run down and bring my sister back. He is good at being protective.

Buddy is nine years old now but he still has many great years ahead of him. Buddy is the best dog ever and I’m glad that we gave him a home and a new start in life. I’m glad that Buddy is always by my side and he is a big cuddle boy, too!

PS: I love your mags and your crew is also amazing!
